Nakamura celebrates double victory at the opening round of the Summer Grand Prix in Wisła

Naoki Nakamura has kicked off the 2026/27 ski jumping season with a one-two victory. Having won the opening event of the FIS Summer Grand Prix in Wisła on Saturday, the Japanese athlete celebrated another victory on Sunday, underlining his strong early-season form. On Saturday, Nakamura had already secured a commanding victory on the Adam Małysz Hill with jumps of 129.0 metres and the day’s longest jump of 135.0 metres, scoring 271.7 points. Second place went to Austria’s Marco Wörgötter. With jumps of 125.5 and 132.0 metres, he scored 266.0 points, confirming his strong form. The podium was completed by Gregor Deschwanden from Switzerland, who scored 262.4 points after jumps of 123.5 and 129.0 metres. Danil Vassilyev provided one of the surprises. The Kazakh finished fourth, relegating the experienced Czech jumper Roman Koudelka to fifth place. Juri Kesseli also put in a convincing performance: the Swiss athlete finished sixth, achieving the best result of his career to date.

 

The Austrian B team put in a strong performance. Alongside Wörgötter, no fewer than six athletes – Lukas Haagen (8th), Simon Steinberger (9th), Jakob Steinberger (22nd), Hannes Landerer (23rd) and Johannes Pölz (25th) – made it into the points. Only Julijan Smid, in 49th place, missed out on the final round. The Norwegian Joergen Oliver Stroem celebrated a successful Grand Prix debut. With a strong second jump, he made up eleven places to finish eleventh. Japan’s Yuto Nakamura also put in an impressive performance in his first Grand Prix appearance, finishing 13th.

 

The season opener proved less successful for the German team. Luca Roth, in 26th place, was the only DSV athlete to reach the final round. Finn Braun (42nd) and Adrian Tittel (53rd) missed out on the points by a considerable margin. From a Swiss perspective, Killian Peier joined Deschwanden and Kesseli in reaching the final round. However, the 30-year-old dropped from fifth to 14th place there. Simon Ammann (32nd) and Felix Trunz (51st) were eliminated after the first round.

 

 

Nakamura was unbeatable on the second day of competition too. With jumps of 128.5 and 133.0 metres, the 29-year-old once again secured a commanding victory and celebrated his second Grand Prix win in two days. The Japanese athlete had already enjoyed his strongest season to date last winter with two World Cup podium finishes, and he seamlessly built on those performances in Wisła.

The surprise of the day on Sunday came from the 18-year-old Estonian Kaimar Vagul. With a jump of 136.0 metres in the first round, he achieved the longest distance of the weekend, before securing second place with another strong jump of 131.0 metres. For Vagul, this was by far the best result of his international career to date. Third place went to the Slovenian Rok Oblak, who thus stood on the podium of a Summer Grand Prix for the first time in his career. Gregor Deschwanden confirmed his consistently strong form by finishing fourth, narrowly missing out on the podium.

 

 

In the women’s event, the Slovenian athletes shared the victories in Wisła. Ema Klinec won Saturday’s opening event by a clear margin, whilst Olympic champion Nika Vodan claimed victory on Sunday. Norway’s Silje Opseth finished on the podium on both days of competition, coming second and third respectively.
