As tradition dictates, the New Year’s ski jumping event took place on 1 January 2026 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Held in perfect weather conditions, the competition was staged in front of a sold-out crowd at the Große Olympiaschanze and provided an impressive show for the 22,000 spectators in attendance.
In the first round, Jan Hoerl set a strong benchmark with a jump of 141 meters and appeared capable of putting pressure on the dominant leader Prevc. However, Domen Prevc remained unfazed. The Slovenian responded immediately with an outstanding jump of 143 meters, taking a confident lead after the opening round.
Prevc also left no doubts in the final round about who was in control of the hill and the competition on New Year’s Day. Jan Hoerl delivered a solid jump of 131.5 meters, which briefly put him in the lead. But Domen Prevc once again soared to an impressive 141 meters, securing the victory of the day. With his second win in the Four Hills Tournament, the Slovenian extended his overall lead to 619.8 points and now holds a clear advantage over Jan Hoerl, who sits at 584.8 points in second place in the standings.
After his second victory, Domen Prevc said: “It looks easy, but only a few people see that I got up at 7 a.m. and that everything from then until the competition is focused on delivering a strong performance on the hill. You still have to be strict with yourself and put your body into a mode of full concentration.”
The first competition of the new year was especially successful for young talent Stephan Embacher. The 19-year-old Austrian was already in a strong position for a podium finish after the first round, sitting in fourth place with a jump of 134 meters. In the final round, he outperformed the competition with a jump of 141.5 meters, pushing Ren Nikaido and Ryoyu Kobayashi of Japan down to fourth and fifth place. For Embacher, this marked his first-ever podium finish at the Four Hills Tournament.
Looking at the German athletes competing in their second home World Cup event of the Tournament, Felix Hoffmann and Philipp Raimund once again delivered strong performances, finishing in sixth and seventh place respectively. The top ten were completed by Kacper Tomasiak of Poland in eighth, Daniel Tschofenig of Austria in ninth, and Maximilian Ortner of Austria alongside Switzerland’s Gregor Deschwanden in a shared tenth place.
The competition was less successful for Domen Prevc’s Slovenian teammate Timi Zajc. Already at the opening event in Oberstdorf, he had been disqualified just before the award ceremony due to a suit that exceeded the regulations by three millimeters. The same fate struck him again at the second competition of the Four Hills. This time, his suit was four millimeters outside the allowed limits, leading to his disqualification before his first jump in the knockout round. As a result, Timi Zajc also received a red card.
