2017-07-17 · 10:20

The local matadors dominate at the jumping in Wisla. Karl Geiger (GER) convinced with 3rd rank in the individual competition.

Perfect weekend for the Polish athletes at the Summer-Grand-Prix-Kick-Off at the familiar Wisla. Since defending champion Maciej Kot already won the qualification in front of Dawid Kubacki and Andreas Wank (GER) on Thursday the strong Polish team around Kot, Kubacki, Stoch and Zyla lived up to their role as favourites on Friday and won the team competition. Until the penultimate jumper the Norwegians (Gangnes, Fannemel, Johansson, Tande) were in the lead.

Dawid Kubacki gained the lead for his team and final jumper Maciej Kot secured the victory with his last jump. Eventually the Poles won with 994,7 points before Norway (982,5) and Germany (951,9). National coach Werner Schuster nominated Andreas Wellinger, Karl Geiger, Andreas Wank and Stephan Leyhe for the team competition. The ranking continued with Slovenia (948,7) and Austria (935,8), Finland, Czech Republic and Switzerland.

There was a thrilling duel between Maciej Kot and Dawid Kubacki during the individual competition on Saturday - affected by the wind as well. During the half-time Kot was in the lead, Kubacki just in 6th place. In the second round though Kubacki managed a jump of 132,5 meter, Kot could not keep up with 127,5 meter and had to be content with the 2nd place. Surprisingly Karl Geiger from Oberstdorf ranked 3rd (130 and 128 meter). Daniel-Andre Tande managed a top result with a 4th place in the individual competition. Stefan Hula came in 5th, Roman Koudelka (CZE) 6th. In 7th place was another surprise: the Italian Sebastian Colloredo. Gregor Schlierenzauer was the best Austrian in 12th place.

In absence of overall World Cup winner Stefan Kraft the kick-off did not go well for the top-jumpers Andreas Wellinger and Kamil Stoch. Four Hills Tournament winner Stock almost missed the qualification for the final round after ranking in 31st after the first round on Saturday, Wellinger came in at a disappointing 19th place. It was a disappointing weekend for Richard Freitag as well. After he was not nominated for the team competition he missed the finals of the individual competition as well, ranking 42nd. One of the most pleasant news comes from the Norwegian team: Kenneth Gangnes came in 8th in the team as well as the individual competition and reported back impressively after his cruciate ligament rupture.

The Summer-Grand-Prix will be continued in Germany in two weeks: the next individual competition will be on the 29th of July in Hinterzarten.
